Support Cleanser

Cooling and clarifying, Support Cleanser lifts daily pollutants from skin while calming irritation and redness. This feather-light, non-foaming cleanser decongests without barrier disruption or over-drying, giving immediate relief to sun-stressed or sensitized skin, as well as acne and breakouts. Herbalist infusions and raw cleansing oils are layered with honey and clay; their naturally occurring enzymes and purifying actions loosen congestion, and leave skin clear, comfortable, and nourished.

KEY ACTIONS

  • Cleanses and decongests without stripping the skin
  • Tonic herbs soothe and cool irritation and redness
  • Leaves skin feeling nourished, balanced, and calm

SKIN TYPE

Combination, congested, oily, inflamed, acneic; suitable for all skin types, including sensitive

In herbalism, inflammation is the first signal to address when the skin is under stress. Whether it presents as reactive sensitivity, redness, mild irritation, or inflamed acne, these expressions share a common root. Support Cleanser begins there, tending to inflammation in every form it takes.

Sensitive and breakout-prone skin rarely share a cleanser, as many acne formulas strip the lipid barrier and disturb the microbiome, often intensifying the very inflammation they aim to calm. Support works differently. It purifies and decongests pores without dismantling the skin’s defenses, cooling underlying heat, and making it appropriate for skin experiencing inflammation in any form.

Composed of 24 active botanicals, this soothing formula brings treatment-level nutrient density into the cleansing step, rich in compounds more often reserved for serums than cleansers.

Multiple varieties of CHAMOMILE are used in complementary forms, selected for their ability to cool inflamed tissue, calm hypersensitive skin, and interrupt the cascade of irritation that fuels redness and breakouts. An extended root infusion of BURDOCK and DANDELION, LICORICE, and ECHINACEA adds depth, delivering inulin-rich prebiotics to support the microbiome, detoxification pathways, and boosting surface immunity.

Light, freshly pressed cleansing oils of raw, unrefined SUNFLOWER and SAFFLOWER dissolve oxidized sebum and congestion without disrupting the lipid barrier. Rather than stripping, they allow stagnation to release while hydration and barrier integrity remain intact. These raw oils retain their active enzymes and are paired with raw HONEY and a touch of APPLE CIDER VINEGAR to gently encourage natural turnover to refine the skin, clear debris, and maintain clarity. FRENCH PINK CLAY the gentlest of clays, plays an important role in deeper pore decongestion while preserving the skin’s softness.

Small-batch, farmer-distilled citrus oils of GRAPEFRUIT and BLOOD ORANGE are microdosed to brighten and bring lightness, balancing the calming florals of CALENDULA and LAVENDER.

95% Whole Plant Organic

GERMAN CHAMOMILE
Organically farmed and harvested exclusively for Laurel in the Pacific Northwest, Chamomile provides the instant cooling and soothing action the Support Cleanser is known for, calming irritated, inflamed, and reactive skin.

GRAPEFRUIT + BLOOD ORANGE
Non-photosensitizing citrus oils help balance the skin’s natural oil production while lending a brightening and uplifting cleanse. These oils are distilled exclusively for Laurel by an artisan distiller in California using a technique to ensure they are non-photosensitizing.

CALENDULA
Used two ways in Support Cleanser, as a medicinal hydrosol and a resinous, whole-plant extraction. Calendula supports gentle cleansing, regeneration, and balances inflammatory pathways. Calendula is a bacteriostatic, providing both nourishment for beneficial flora while discouraging colony imbalance.

SAFFLOWER + SUNFLOWER
Our preferred raw, freshly pressed seed oils for cleansing are used in perfect balance to dissolve oxidized sebum and blackheads. These lightweight oils bind to congestion within pores so it can be easily wiped away, without disrupting the skin’s lipid barrier.
Honey
Small-batch, raw California Honey provides naturally occurring enzymes that support gentle, healthy cell turnover while helping the skin remain hydrated and comfortable.

BURDOCK + DANDELION
These nutritious roots provide inulin and other prebiotics, encouraging a diverse and resilient skin microbiome. These cleansing alternative herbs are traditionally used for the detoxification of pathways and cellular metabolism.

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
A small amount of Apple Cider Vinegar provides malic and lactic acids to softly exfoliate and refine the skin. Used sparingly, it enhances clarity while remaining gentle and suitable for all skin types.

FRENCH PINK CLAY
The gentlest of all clays, French Pink Clay improves circulation and encourages the release of deep pore congestion without drying or stripping the skin.

Laurel Skin formulas set a benchmark for high ingredient and formulation standards that the beauty industry would collectively consider unreasonable. Here are a few highlights that set Effortless Cleanser apart from other cleansers:

  • Exclusive use of freshly pressed, unrefined, virgin oils to maintain antioxidant and nutrient availability
  • No foaming or stripping ingredients, skin health prioritized over conventional trends
  • Exclusive use of artisanal hydrosols, as opposed to water
  • Micro-dosed essential oils for phytonutrient support, without overwhelming the skin
  • The abbreviated list above cannot be found elsewhere – our level of care and integrity is proudly unreasonable.

    Cleansing with Plants
When people switch over to relying on plants and only plants for their skin health, sometimes the concern is that the skin won’t feel “clean” after using a whole-plant cleanser. What you’re actually going to feel is your skin’s natural protective barrier.

Your skin barrier is paramount to skin health. It protects against environmental stressors, helps prevent inflammation and premature aging, and provides a home for beneficial bacteria, which is critical to balanced skin. Conventional foaming and stripping cleansers remove this layer entirely, which leaves the skin vulnerable to UV damage, irritation, and imbalance; the list goes on. Cleansing with plants feels quite different because they work with the skin, not in opposition to its natural, desired state of being. If you’ve relied on foaming cleansers for years, it can take up to two weeks for your skin to recalibrate and feel comfortable maintaining its natural barrier on its own. This adjustment period is a sign of healing, not residue. Don’t give up! Most people find that they immediately enjoy the feeling of cleansing with this more nutritive approach, but it can also take time.

Whole Plant Cleansing Oils vs All The Rest
We’re often asked about the comedogenic scale and how it applies to the oils used in Support Cleanser, especially Coconut Oil. For context, the comedogenic scale was developed using refined, standardized cosmetic oils. These oils have had their antioxidants, nutrients, and enzymes removed, which fundamentally changes how they behave on the skin.

Our oils are very different. Every oil we use is raw and unrefined, with its full spectrum of antioxidants, enzymes, and nutrients intact. Because of this, the traditional comedogenic scale simply does not apply to our formulas. These whole oils are easily recognized, broken down by both their own enzymes and the enzymes excreted by our beneficial flora, functioning as nourishment rather than obstruction.

Both of our creamy gel cleansers contain Coconut Oil at just 4%. At this low percentage, it supports the cleanser’s creamy texture and allows for effortless removal with a warm cloth. Coconut Oil also has unique properties that help keep fungal acne in check, making it one of the few oils well-suited to that concern. While we don’t recommend applying Coconut Oil directly to most skin types, within this carefully balanced cleansing formula, it is not comedogenic and poses no risk to congested skin.
