Single Farm Hydrosol – California Rose
– All Skin Types
– 100% Whole Plant Organic
– 1 Beneficial Active Ingredient
We love Rose for the multitude of benefits it provides for our skin, which you can read more about on our blog post about them. Roses are incredible for hydration, barrier repair, antioxidant activity, as well as plumping and firming the skin – to name a few things! However, most of us are not aware that Rose is a beauty crop that is incredibly vulnerable to forced labor, unethical treatment, and unfair wages. Concerned growers have staged protests against distillery houses, demanding fair wages, yet Bulgarian Rose prices remain low. This points to unethical practices, and unfortunately, the Fair Trade Organization cannot keep up. As a company, Laurel Skin is responsible for close to 4 tons of fresh Rose petals annually, and we have been working on cultivating a source for California grown Roses for nearly a decade. While we haven’t yet been able to completely free ourselves from all the Bulgarian Rose supply concerns, we are thrilled to be able to offer this California sourced hydrosol in limited quantities again this year. While this single-farmed, artisan-distilled hydrosol is no doubt more expensive than its Bulgarian counterparts, here is what you are supporting with your purchase:
– The moral understanding that this is what Rose petal distillations cost, if not more. We are doing our best to raise awareness in the industry toward more ethical labor standards, and this is a part of that effort.
– The essential oil has not been removed from this distillation, ensuring potency and efficacy. One drop of Rose essential oil contains 60 roses, and is valued close to $40 per ml. You will feel the superior hydration from this rare type of distillation.
– The scent of this California Rose hydrosol smells fresher—like a rose garden after a rain, and less like an intensely floral perfume. The scent is more well-rounded and herbaceous. Earthy notes can be picked up alongside the intoxicating scent of rose petals.
Limited Quantities Available
Rose – Rose hydrosol has hydrating and barrier strengthening properties. Roses are gentle and soothing to the skin, and are deeply hydrating and supportive to connective tissue. Roses reduce the appearance of fine lines and are potent free radical scavengers.

Devotion to Slow Beauty: This hydrosol is special to me, because it’s something I’ve been working toward for years. It has long broken my heart at how well our California climate supports the growth of Roses, but I haven’t been able to source this ingredient here. The reason for that is because Rose is so labor intensive to grow, and growing it in the United States would out-price this ingredient from the beauty industry. So, before you ask why it’s so expensive for a Rose hydrosol, you should know that this ingredient would be double the price that it is now according to industry pricing standards! We chose intentionally to keep it as low as we possibly could in order to share it with you. I have communicated with this Rose farmer (or you could say ‘stalked’ or ‘hounded’ this Rose farmer/artisan distiller) for years now, as the Roses were just being planted when we first connected. I am honored to finally be able to share a Rose hydrosol with the world that I can say without any hesitation is good for the planet and good for all people involved.
