The infusions for Hydration Compound begin months in advance, with each plant moving through two or three different preparations to capture as many beneficial phytonutrients as possible. Though built from just four plants, this Compound contains 12 distinct whole-plant medicine variations.

Worked with in four forms here, HEIRLOOM ROSESincludes a fresh crimson petal infusion, two long-cycle macerations, and an oil-rich California Single Farm Hydrosol. In the formula, it brings humectant, barrier-supportive, and elasticity-building care. Roses have a vast antioxidant profile, providing broad-spectrum resilience to stressed skin.

The shining star is MARSHAMALLOW ROOT, a mucilaginous root long revered by herbalists as Nature’s hyaluronic acid. It delivers deep structural hydration and soothing relief, while supporting the microbiome and fluid movement within the skin.

Prepared in three forms, including a 24-hour decoction, ASTRAGALUS ROOT contributes restorative support for depleted skin in need of resilience and vitality.

Traditionally valued in Chinese Medicine for its relationship to longevity, modern research attributes Astragalus with the ability to protect and repair aging DNA.

For a final layer of dewy hydration, CHIA SEED MILK lends the rare plant gift of omega-3 fatty acids. Though this Compound is largely water-loving, Chia introduces lipid support that helps cushion the barrier against dryness, oxidative stress, and water loss.

SENSORY PROFILE
How it feels: a hue of dark rusty garnet, a featherweight droplet that holds a hint of structure
How it smells: gently sweet, dried rose petals and damp, earthy roots

PHYTOCHEMISTRY PROFILE
Hydration Compound contains these notable phytonutrients, along with many others:

polysaccharides and mucilaginous compounds (including beta-glucan and galacturonic acid – botanical hyaluronic acid), B vitamins (including niacinamide), flavonoids (including anthocyanins, quercetin, and catechin), vitamin C, ferulic acid, betaine, palmitic acid, various polyphenols, gallic acid, essential fatty acids (including omega 3), vitamin E, phytoceramides, phytosterols, trace minerals including potassium, copper, manganese, magnesium

USAGE
Laurel Skin Compounds are designed to be used after a Hydrating Elixir application.

Shake well before each use; for best mixing results, empty dropper fully prior to shaking. After misting skin generously with a Hydrating Elixir, apply 2-3 drops of Compound onto fingertips and press into damp skin, including face, neck, and chest. Follow with Serum and/or Balm.

SENSITIVITY NOTE
Our Compounds are not recommended for reactive skin (with the exception of Soothe Compound).

Due to the phytonutrient potency of our Compounds, we do not recommend them for those who are brand new to Laurel Skin, but rather for those who are already using a Laurel Skin ritual with ease.

RITUAL
Marshmallow Root is an herbalist’s most powerful water binder. Hydration Compound needs a companion Hydrating Elixir to achieve its hydrating effects. The Marshmallow Root will bind with the waters of the Elixir to draw hydration deep into the skin, accentuating a plumping and firming effect. Then the final Serum step locks it in. Hydration Compound is our Compound of choice when we have a photoshoot, or special event – if your skin needs to look its absolute best that day, Hydration Compound, as a plumper and firmer, is the one to reach for.

Store this product in a cool, dry, and dark place. Use within 6 months of opening and by the use-by date found on the bottom of the bottle.

100% Whole Plant Organic

HEIRLOOM ROSES
Rose offers a range of broad-spectrum antioxidants and water- and oil-soluble nutrients, including B vitamins, vitamin E, catechin, vitamin C, flavonoids, anthocyanins, palmitic acid, and gallic acid. These delicate petals are potent humectants, helping prevent transepidermal water loss and strengthening the skin’s barrier with phytoceramides. Their vast nutrient profile prompts regeneration, with the ability to increase elasticity, firmness, and build connective tissue.

MARSHMALLOW ROOT
This mucilaginous and polysaccharide-rich root is an herbalist’s superhydrator. This fluffy root is Nature’s alternative to lab-made hyaluronic acid, containing both galaturonic and glucuronic acids, plumping up each cell with a boost of hydration. Marshmallow is supportive to both our lipid barrier and microbiome, by offering a wealth of B vitamins, lecithin, and phytosterols. This Root is a soothing, softening anti-inflammatory, with additional notable phytonutrients like betaine, quercetin, ferulic acid, and selenium. Its unique mineral profile, alongside its polysaccharides, is what makes Marshmallow more structurally hydrating, with the ability to break up stagnation and introduce fluidity.

ASTRAGALUS ROOT
Astragalus has been closely studied for its ability to protect and repair telomeres, which are responsible for cellular aging. Telomere repair is an aspect of DNA repair, allowing cells to make more precise copies of themselves. A revered plant for longevity in Chinese Medicine, Astragalus is a nourishing, calming, anti-inflammatory, which regulates surface immunity and has a balancing effect on skin prone to reactions. To counter depletion from chronic oxidative stress, this medicinal root provides polysaccharides, minerals, niacin, and saponins.

CHIA SEED MILK
Chia brings both water-bound nutrients and lipid nourishment to the formula. Housemade Chia milk contains soothing, anti-inflammatory minerals like zinc and magnesium, providing nourishment for both the skin and microbiome. Chia’s rare plant source of omega-3 fatty acids helps cushion the barrier against dryness, sun damage, and oxidation. Though subtle in feel, it plays an important role in the skin’s dewy, protected finish.

Laurel Skin Compounds break an industry mold. A new approach to plant-active skincare and cosmeceuticals, these Compounds have created a first-of-their-kind category.

While it’s common practice for natural skincare to include lab-made synthetic cosmeceutical ingredients like retinol, vitamin C, or hyaluronic acid, we see imbalance in that formulation approach. Those ingredients force the skin into specific actions without providing the complex synergistic nutrients needed to sustain those actions in a balanced way.

The Laurel Skin Compounds provide whole-plant alternatives to common cosmeceutical serums, like retinol, vitamin C, and niacinamide.

These herbalist-created, topical, whole-plant skin supplements are formulated to support the skin through both momentary flare-ups and chronic conditions. Used by the drop with our Hydrating Elixirs, the Compounds support specific skin concerns and evolving symptoms of imbalance, allowing for a more customized Laurel Skin Ritual.

Each Compound is a labor of patient dedication, taking several months to create. Containing multiple types of plant mediums, medicines, and techniques, the intricate process involves each plant undergoing a diverse array of maceration, extraction, and infusion. This process ensures that we capture the complete phytonutrient profile of each whole plant in the final product.

This category and approach is not only unheard-of and unprecedented, but proudly unreasonable.

Plants vs Synthetics
There remains a significant stigma in the beauty industry that synthetic nutrients are necessary to alter the health and appearance of our skin – this belief couldn’t be further from reality. Whole organic plants, when handled with great care and formulated appropriately, deliver potent concentrations of phytonutrients that can transform the skin. Laurel Skin Compounds are rich in valuable constituents such as botanical hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, vitamin C, and ferulic acid. All of the plant’s nutrients are proportioned and in balance, with complex delivery and stability systems inherent in the plants themselves.

This approach is known as Whole Plant Herbalism. Most Herbalist lineages believe that a plant’s vast synergistic chemical profile is more impactful than any of its single, isolated parts. Every plant is made up of hundreds to thousands of intricate constituents, harmoniously working together, and whole plant herbalism relies on that full spectrum of a plant’s complex chemical profile to support the body’s natural functions. The Laurel Skin Compounds fully embody this approach of whole plant herbalism.
