Science: While physical sunscreens like Zinc have an important place and are necessary in some situations, there is much evidence to support that plants can indeed strengthen our skin’s response to UV rays. Studies show that nutrients such as Vitamin E, Vitamin C, ferulic acid, beta carotene, and many different polyphenols can lessen damage brought on by both UVA and UVB rays. There is also evidence to support that localized Vitamin D production helps to prevent the damage associated with UVA rays, and physical sunscreens inhibit the ability for Vitamin D production. All of this current research points to a level of uncertainty around how often and how heavily we should be reliant on physical sunscreens.

Ritual: All the research aside, what do I do personally? I am personally not in the sun very much each day. If I get 20 minutes of full sun exposure in an average day that would be on the high side. Because of that I do not wear physical sunscreens myself on a daily basis. When I do get more sun than usual – either on vacation or on an outdoor adventure without a hat, that is when I pull out the physical sunscreen. I do this because that is when my skin is vulnerable being in an atypical situation. I like to test the limits for my own skin, because I whole heartedly believe we shouldn’t live in fear of the sun, or even sun burn for that matter – which is just a simple way that our body communicates to us that it has had enough. All we need to do is listen.
