Desert plants thrive in relentless sun and heat by producing protective compounds that defend against oxidative stress. In Brighten Compound, those same botanical defenses come together to help support the skin that has been damaged through longterm light and heat exposure. This combination includes medicinal herbs that shift deep-seated chronic inflammation, counter looping free radical activity, and balance melanin production.

Leading with CREOSOTE, a western native, medicinal plant used as a skin-healer in too many Indigenous lineages to name (Cahuilla, Yuhaaviatam, O’odham), this resinous and resilient desert shrub was more modernly relied upon to preserve food against lipid peroxidation with its powerful antioxidants. Those same nutrients are what protect and defend the skin’s own lipid barrier from UV-induced oxidative stress.

LICORICE ROOT is a powerful combination of herbal actions, traditionally used to shift deeply rooted, chronic inflammation with phytonutrients comparable to steroids. Additionally, this botanical ally shows research on its ability to visibly brighten hyperpigmentation by slowing melanin through tyrosinase inhibition, as well as through the dispersion of melanin clusters. UVA URSI, rich in natural arbutin, reduces discoloration and supports repair of melasma and acne scarring, making it a potent alternative to hydroquinone.

FRANKINCENSE, an ancient healing resin abundant in boswellic acid, promotes cellular repair and protects mitochondrial DNA from free radical damage. And TURMERIC, one of the most anti-inflammatory plants known to any herbalist, works through multiple biochemical pathways to brighten skin and reduce long-term damage with its powerful curcuminoids.

SENSORY PROFILE
How it feels: a hue of rich burnt sienna, featherweight droplet that absorbs quickly with a weightless finish
How it smells: medicinal roots, earthy resins, smoky desert shrubs

PHYTOCHEMISTRY PROFILE
Brighten Compound contains these notable phytonutrients, along with many others:
boswellic acid, arbutin, curcuminoids, nordihydroguaiaretic acid, glabridin, glycryrrhizin, liquiritin, ursolic acid, allantoin, resins, terpenes, terpenoids, tannins, saponins, phytosterols, B vitamins, vitamin C, various minerals such as phosphorus, calcium, zinc, magnesium

USAGE
Laurel Skin Compounds are designed to be used after a Hydrating Elixir application.

Shake well before each use; for best mixing results, empty dropper fully prior to shaking. After misting skin generously with a Hydrating Elixir, apply 2-3 drops of Compound onto fingertips and press into damp skin, including face, neck, and chest. Follow with Serum and/or Balm.

SENSITIVITY NOTE
Our Compounds are not recommended for reactive skin (with the exception of Soothe Compound).

Due to the phytonutrient potency of our Compounds, we do not recommend them for those who are brand new to Laurel Skin, but rather for those who are already using a Laurel Skin ritual with ease.

RITUAL
An ideal Compound for layering, Brighten Compound can be used as a spot treatment for hyperpigmented areas of the skin. Using Brighten all over the skin is one way to use it, and that will help address inflammation and antioxidant protection overall. However, if you are using multiple Compounds at once, it may feel more intuitive to use Brighten as a spot treatment. In that case, apply your full coverage Compound first, and use 1 drop of Brighten on the areas where you need it most – typically the temples, cheeks, or forehead is where melasma shows up most prominently. It can also be used in this way for post-acne scarring. Then complete your ritual with another mist of Elixir, Serum, and/or Balm.

Store this product in a cool, dry, and dark place. Use within 6 months of opening and by the use-by date found on the bottom of the bottle.

100% Whole Plant Organic

CREOSOTE
This native desert shrub, rich in healing resins, has traditionally been used by Indigenous tribes to treat various skin ailments. A notable antioxidant, NDGA (nordihydroguaiaretic acid), protects against lipid oxidation so effectively that it was used in the food industry as a way to preserve and protect oils, similar to how vitamin E is used today. Creosote thrives in harsh and extreme conditions of heat and sun. Its anti-inflammatory phytonutrients, which allow it to co-exist with intense UV radiation, aid our skin’s own ability for adaptation and resilience.

UVA URSI
This plant is a potent alternative to hydroquinone for whole-plant herbalists. It has high arbutin content, balancing melanin production, inhibiting tyrosinase, and the concentration of melanin clustering. Uva Ursi is ideal for aiding in the appearance of scars, melasma, and hyperpigmentation of all kinds. The presence of ursolic acid and flavonoids offers collagen and cellular rejuvenation.

FRANKINCENSE
This ancient healing resin is often referred to as “nature’s bandaid”, promoting rapid cellular repair with its anti-inflammatory, strengthening, and antiseptic properties. Its water-based infusion contains Boswellic Acid, which has been shown to reduce certain types of skin cancer and corrects DNA damage caused by too much sun exposure.

TURMERIC
Possibly the most powerful anti-inflammatory plant in any herbalist’s arsenal, this intensely yellow root works through its curcuminoids on multiple inflammatory biochemical pathways, including the inhibition of NFkB and COX-2. It works to boost our own inherent antioxidant responsiveness and is actively researched for most forms of cancer. These notable actions allow Turmeric to be an ally working on various skin functions of defense and protection, while also visibly brightening skin tone.

LICORICE
Well-known for being a valuable skin brightener, slowing melanin production by inhibiting tyrosinase. It’s a potent anti-inflammatory, with medicinal properties comparable to steroids. Notable flavonoids include protective glabridin, preventing additional sun damage from occurring, and liquiritin, an antioxidant that helps disperse existing melanin clusters.

Laurel Skin Compounds break an industry mold. A new approach to plant-active skincare and cosmeceuticals, these Compounds have created a first-of-their-kind category.

While it’s common practice for natural skincare to include lab-made synthetic cosmeceutical ingredients like retinol, vitamin C, or hyaluronic acid, we see imbalance in that formulation approach. Those ingredients force the skin into specific actions without providing the complex synergistic nutrients needed to sustain those actions in a balanced way.

The Laurel Skin Compounds provide whole-plant alternatives to common cosmeceutical serums, like retinol, vitamin C, and niacinamide.

These herbalist-created, topical, whole-plant skin supplements are formulated to support the skin through both momentary flare-ups and chronic conditions. Used by the drop with our Hydrating Elixirs, the Compounds support specific skin concerns and evolving symptoms of imbalance, allowing for a more customized Laurel Skin Ritual.

Each Compound is a labor of patient dedication, taking several months to create. Containing multiple types of plant mediums, medicines, and techniques, the intricate process involves each plant undergoing a diverse array of maceration, extraction, and infusion. This process ensures that we capture the complete phytonutrient profile of each whole plant in the final product.

This category and approach is not only unheard-of and unprecedented, but proudly unreasonable.

When Pigment Tells a Bigger Story
The sun often takes the blame for hyperpigmentation and melasma, but the story is rarely that simple.

Many people who are diligent about sun protection still develop melasma or uneven pigmentation. From an herbalist perspective, this makes sense. Skin reflects the larger state of the body, and pigment changes are often influenced by deeper patterns of inflammation, liver health, gut health, hormonal shifts, or autoimmune conditions. When these systems are under strain, the skin may respond more strongly to sun and heat exposure.

This is why herbal traditions approach skin concerns holistically. Topical care can certainly help brighten and rebalance the complexion, but the most lasting changes often come from supporting the body as a whole.

Melasma, in this light, becomes less of an isolated skin issue and more of a visible signal, a reminder to step back and care for the systems that sustain vibrant skin over time.
